Chapter 377: A Taste of Tension

Chapter 377: A Taste of Tension

Adam worked quickly, his hands moving with practiced ease as he prepared the meat. He seasoned it with a careful hand—just enough salt, a sprinkle of herbs, a touch of something smoky he’d found among the scattered pouches. The fire crackled, and soon the scent of roasting meat filled the air, rich and savory.Ignis’s eyes went wide. Her mouth fell open, and a thin line of drool began to trickle down her chin. Her voice came out in a reverent whisper, thick with hunger.

"Adam... that smells amazing... I can’t wait to eat it!"

Lilith produced a handkerchief from somewhere within her gown, her crimson eyes fixed on Ignis with dry amusement. Her voice was light, carrying a note of pointed teasing.

"Wipe your mouth, Ignis. You’re drooling like a wild beast."

Ignis wiped her chin with the back of her hand, her eyes never leaving the roasting meat. "It’s not my fault it smells so good!"

Adam pulled the first piece from the fire, examining it with a critical eye. Satisfied, he placed it on a broad leaf and gestured to the group.

"It’s ready. Eat while it’s hot."

They gathered around the fire, the warmth of the flames mixing with the scent of roasted meat. The first bite was met with a chorus of appreciation.

Azrynn blew gently on her portion before taking a bite. Her yellow eyes widened, and her voice came out with genuine surprise.

"This is... really good. I didn’t expect it to taste this rich."

Ignis had already torn into her piece with abandon, her cheeks bulging, her voice muffled and cheerful.

"Mmph! It’s delicious!"

Adam’s voice carried a note of gentle reproach, his crimson eyes fixed on her with fond exasperation.

"Slow down, Ignis. You’re going to choke."

Isolde ate in silence, her eyes fixed on the fire. She didn’t speak, but the faint relaxation in her shoulders said enough.

Adam’s gaze drifted to Alice, who sat slightly apart from the group, her dark violet eyes fixed on the fire, her arms crossed. She hadn’t touched her portion. Her tail lay still behind her, and Her cat ears flattened against her head.

Adam’s lips curved into a faint, understanding smile. He reached for a piece of meat, blew on it gently to cool it, and held it out to her.

"Here, eat it."

Alice’s head turned sharply away, her voice flat and clipped.

"Hmph!"

Lilith caught Adam’s wrist before he could pull back. She leaned in and took the meat directly from his fingers, her lips brushing his skin as she did. She chewed slowly, her crimson eyes never leaving his face.

"Mmm. You’re getting better at this, Adam."

Alice’s head snapped toward her, her ears flattening further. Her voice came out sharp, laced with indignation.

"Hey! That was mine!"

Lilith’s smile widened. She swallowed, her voice light and innocent.

"You refused it. I simply didn’t want it to go to waste."

Adam let out a long, slow sigh, his voice carrying a note of weary patience.

"Lilith..."

Lilith’s smile was unrepentant as she leaned closer to Adam, her voice dropping to a low, playful murmur.

"Adam~ feed me another one, please."

Alice’s voice rose, sharp and furious, her eyes blazing.

"Lilith, you—!"

Alice lunged forward, her claws extended, dark violet energy flaring along their edges. Her voice was a low, furious growl as she closed the distance on Lilith.

"You’ve crossed the line, Lilith. I’ll tear you apart."

Lilith sidestepped with fluid grace, the attack passing inches from her silver-white hair. A soft, amused laugh escaped her lips as she twisted away, her crimson eyes gleaming with open delight.

"Oh my~ are you challenging me, little cat?"

Alice’s tail shot straight up, bristling with agitation. Her body dropped into a low, predatory crouch, her ears flat against her head. Her dark violet eyes blazed with cold fury, and her voice came out low, carrying a warning that was far more dangerous than any shout.

"You’re dead, spider."

She lunged again, her claws raking through the air in a blur of motion. Lilith’s threads snapped up, deflecting the strike, but Alice was relentless. Her attacks came faster, each one aimed at Lilith’s throat, her eyes, her heart.

Isolde watched the chaos unfold, her pale eyes flicking between the two combatants. Her Crimson Blossom Crown pulsed faintly as she spoke, her voice carrying a note of unease.

"Shouldn’t we stop them? They’re going to hurt each other."

Adam took another bite of his meat, chewing slowly, his expression utterly unbothered. He swallowed, then gestured lazily with his skewer.

"Let them be. They’ll tire themselves out eventually."

Ignis, still chewing, nodded in agreement.

"Mm-hmm!"

Alice’s claws carved a deep gouge in the stone where Lilith had been standing. Lilith’s threads snapped out, wrapping around Alice’s ankle, yanking her off balance. Alice twisted in mid-air, her claws raking across Lilith’s sleeve, leaving shallow tears in the fabric.

Azrynn’s hands moved in a blur, runes flaring to life around her fingers. A shimmering barrier of silver light materialized between the two combatants just as a wave of dark violet void energy exploded from Alice’s palm. The barrier held, cracking slightly but absorbing the brunt of the attack.

Adam’s voice cut through the chaos, carrying a note of dry approval. "Good job, Az."

Ignis, still chewing enthusiastically, held out her empty skewer toward Adam, her voice muffled by a mouthful of meat.

"Adam, can I have another piece?"

Adam reached for the remaining meat, placing a fresh portion on her skewer.

"Leave some for Alice and Lilith. They’re going to be hungry after this."

Alice’s void energy exploded outward in a shower of small, dark violet projectiles, raining down on Lilith like a storm of shadow. Lilith’s threads wove a dense barrier of silver silk, the projectiles shattering against its surface. From the shadows at her feet, Soulreaver emerged, its black blade gleaming with hungry light. Lilith’s hand closed around the hilt, and she surged forward. With a flick of her wrist, Soulreaver dissolved into a dozen smaller fragments, each one streaking toward Alice’s void projectiles. The fragments met the void energy mid-air, detonating in a shower of dark light and silver sparks that illuminated the clearing like a brief, violent sunrise.

Alice and Lilith stood on opposite sides of the clearing, their chests heaving, their eyes locked. Neither had landed a decisive blow, but the intensity of their clash had left the air thick with residual energy.

Lilith’s voice carried a note of breathless amusement, her crimson eyes gleaming despite the exertion.

"My, my. You’re more spirited than I expected, little cat."

Alice’s tail lashed, her voice sharp and unyielding.

"I’m not done with you yet."
