Chapter 7 Holy Light Bird
Chapter 7 Holy Light Bird
"Kid, aren't you asleep yet?" Flander's voice came from the darkness.
"Go to sleep right away."
Ma Hongjun crawled into his sleeping bag and closed his eyes.
That night, he had a dream.
In my dream, there was a golden phoenix, soaring high amidst dazzling light.
Its entire body was ablaze with pure golden flames, and every feather looked as if it were woven from sunlight.
It raised its head and cried out to the sky, its voice piercing through the clouds, causing the heavens and earth to change color.
Ma Hongjun stood on the ground, looking up at the phoenix, a surge of indescribable emotion welling up in his heart.
That's the path he's going to take.
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Ma Hongjun was woken up by Flander.
"Get up. Take advantage of the morning when soul beasts are more active and easier to spot your target."
Ma Hongjun rubbed his eyes, quickly packed his sleeping bag, ate a few bites of dry rations, and then followed Flander into the depths of the forest.
In the early morning of the Soul Hunter Forest, the air is filled with the fresh scent of grass and trees.
Sunlight filters through layers of leaves, casting dappled shadows in the forest.
In the distance, birdsong rose and fell, occasionally interspersed with the low roars of some kind of spirit beast.
Flander walked in front, releasing the aura of a Soul Saint, which drove away all the low-level Soul Beasts around him.
Ma Hongjun followed behind, looking around as he walked, trying to find traces of the Holy Light Sparrow among the treetops.
"The Holy Light Finch prefers to perch in sunny, high places."
As they walked, Flander explained, "They feed on sunlight, so they are most active at dawn and midday. If you see an unusual golden reflection in the canopy, it's very likely a Holy Light Finch."
Ma Hongjun looked up as instructed, his gaze sweeping across the canopies of the large trees.
An hour has passed.
Two hours have passed.
They searched almost a third of the outer territory and encountered more than a dozen different soul beasts.
Wind wolves, iron-backed bears, thorny pythons... but there was no sign of the Light element.
Ma Hongjun's heart sank.
"Teacher, what if there are no Holy Light Sparrows?" he couldn't help but ask.
Flanders did not answer, his brow furrowing slightly.
Although the Soul Hunter Forest has bred many soul beasts, those of the Light type are indeed very rare.
If he can't find it today, he can only take Ma Hongjun to a more distant place, or settle for other soul beasts.
Just then, Ma Hongjun's gaze suddenly froze.
About two hundred meters to the southeast, there is an exceptionally tall oak tree.
Something was glittering at the top of the oak tree, in the canopy.
It wasn't the reflection of dew, but a soft golden light, like a small patch of sun falling on the treetops.
"Teacher, look over there!" Ma Hongjun lowered his voice and pointed to the oak tree.
Flander looked in the direction he was pointing, and his pupils suddenly contracted.
"Holy Light Sparrow".
His voice carried a hint of surprise.
The two approached quietly.
Under that oak tree, Ma Hongjun finally saw the true nature of that golden light.
A small bird, no bigger than the palm of your hand, is covered in golden feathers and has a tuft of fiery red crest feathers on its head, like a small crown.
Its wings were slightly open, and the edges of each feather gleamed with a faint firelight, shining brightly in the sunlight.
It was preening its feathers with its slender beak, occasionally tilting its head to peck at a small insect crawling on the tree trunk.
It was a Holy Light Sparrow, and quite large in size, with an estimated cultivation level of at least three or four hundred years.
"Good luck," Flander said in a low voice. "This Holy Light Sparrow is about four hundred years old, which is right around your absorption limit."
Ma Hongjun's heart suddenly raced.
It is it.
"Teacher, I want this one." His voice was firm, without the slightest hesitation.
Flanders nodded without saying anything more.
He raised his right hand, and seven spirit rings—two yellow, two purple, and three black—sounded silently, but only the first yellow one lit up.
Using your first soul skill to deal with a hundred-year-old soul beast is already giving it too much credit.
An invisible vortex of wind shot out from Flander's palm, moving at great speed and without a sound.
The Holy Light Sparrow sensed the danger and suddenly spread its wings to try to fly away, but it was too late.
The whirlwind precisely wrapped around its body, firmly imprisoning it in mid-air.
The Holy Light Sparrow let out a sharp cry and struggled desperately. Its golden feathers exploded, bursting forth with a burst of blazing holy light flames, attempting to burn away the Wind Bindings.
But that little flame was nothing compared to the power of a Soul Saint.
Flander clenched his fist, and the whirlwind suddenly tightened.
The Holy Light Sparrow let out a mournful cry, its body stiffened, and it fell from mid-air.
"Go, deliver the final blow," Flander said to Ma Hongjun.
Ma Hongjun took a deep breath and stepped forward.
The Holy Light Sparrow was not dead yet, but it was already on the verge of death from the Wind Binding Technique. Its golden feathers were disheveled, and a trace of blood seeped from the corner of its mouth.
Ma Hongjun squatted down and placed his right hand on the head of the Holy Light Sparrow.
His soul power surged, and dark red evil fire burst forth from his palm, enveloping the head of the Holy Light Sparrow.
The Holy Light Sparrow struggled one last time before losing all its breath.
A yellow soul ring slowly rose from the corpse of the Holy Light Sparrow, hovering in mid-air and emitting a soft light.
A hundred-year-old soul ring, yellow in color.
And it's especially bright.
Unlike the yellow spirit rings of ordinary spirit beasts, this is a color unique to light-type spirit beasts.
Ma Hongjun's heart pounded as he looked at the bright yellow spirit ring.
"Sit cross-legged, relax your mind, and use your soul power to guide the soul ring." Flander's voice rang in my ears.
"Remember, do not resist the energy within the spirit ring, but also do not let it dominate you. You are the master, and it is the outsider."
Ma Hongjun sat down cross-legged as instructed, closed his eyes, and released his martial spirit.
A dark red phantom of a turkey appeared behind him, its aura of malevolent fire spreading outwards.
The bright yellow spirit ring seemed to sense something and slowly floated towards him, landing on his head.
A massive surge of energy entered his body.
Ma Hongjun's body jolted violently.
That energy was intense and pure, unlike the burning heat of the evil fire within his body; it was a warm heat, carrying the scent of sunshine.
Two flames collided, intertwined, and fought within his body, as if vying for dominance.
pain.
It wasn't a tearing, excruciating pain, but rather a burning sensation that penetrated deep into the bone marrow.
It felt like something was cleansing his meridians, burning away the grime little by little.
Ma Hongjun gritted his teeth, veins bulged on his forehead, and sweat poured down his face like rain.
Flanders stood to the side, watching him nervously.
Absorbing a hundred-year-old soul ring shouldn't be this difficult for a genius with innate full soul power.
However, Ma Hongjun's situation is special.
His martial soul possesses an evil nature, while the Holy Light Sparrow's soul rings are of the light attribute.
The two properties clashed within the body, causing pain far exceeding that of normal absorption.
But this is the only way.
If you can get through this, the future will be bright.
Ma Hongjun's consciousness began to blur, but he held on tightly to the last bit of clarity in his mind.
You must not faint.
This is the first step he must take to change his fate; he absolutely cannot fail here.
